April 9th/16th Newsletter
Kindergarten Announcements
**I apologize for not getting a post out last week.**
Sarett Nature Center
On Friday, April 21st, we will be leaving Lincoln at 9am and will arrive at Sarett shortly after. Our program begins at 9:30. You are welcome to meet us at the nature center if you were not assigned to this trip. Remember that adults will have to pay the field trip fee of $3. We have already paid for all students.
ELA
Students learned to compare and contrast in photographs and text by determining important signal words such as too, also, both, and but. This week we compared and contrasted how children lived in the past with how we live now. We made connections with the Magic Tree House book we read about Jack and Annie visiting a one-room school.
We worked with the letter Jj, digraphs, and blends, and letter Kk, and s blends. We learned that most words that start with the /k/ sound have a Cc if it is followed by an a,o,u and it will begin with a Kk if it is followed by an e,i,y. We call that the kitty cat rule.
Math
Students are understanding that numbers 11-19 are a group of 10 and some more ones and to keep track of images that have been counted. We finished our unit about bigger numbers and are beginning a new unit about building shapes. This unit will help to reinforce counting concepts as they build with and consider the attributes of pattern blocks.
Social Studies
We learned about responsibility and why people do not have the right to do whatever they want. People have to think about the rights and safety of other people.
Science: Animal Needs
In this unit, students use observations to understand the basic needs of animals. Students explore how animals need things to eat and a safe place to live, and also how animals can change their environments to meet those needs. This week we learned about a few different ways animals find food!
P2: Humility
True humility is a sign of strength; it is a quiet confidence in who you are. It requires an honest self-reflection on your strengths and weaknesses, and self-control over ego, arrogance, and vanity. We noticed a few examples in our class this week of humble people and chances to be humble.
JA: We began Junior Achievement last week. We have a volunteer, Darcy Barker, coming in on Tuesdays to help us learn more about making choices with money. She will come in each week for 4 more weeks.
