February 12th Newlsetter

                        Kindergarten Announcements

ELA

We have now learned 4 of our 5 vowels, a, i, o, and u. We are practicing the short sound mostly but are also learning that there are many other sounds vowels can make. Point these out as you read books with your children.

We will be starting something new to help us learn our sight words.  We have 6 lists of words, one for each color in the rainbow, going in order from red to purple.  When your child can read a whole list, he/she can color in that strip on a rainbow we have here at school.  When all the colors are colored in, on their rainbow, meaning that your child knows all of our Kindergarten sight words, they will bring home their rainbow and a pack of Skittles to celebrate.  We are going to be checking how they are progressing from now until the end of the year.  When your child gets to a word he/she does not know, they will bring that list home with the word circled.  Please practice that word and the words after it on that list.  They can then have another chance to read the list correctly and color in the corresponding strip on their rainbow.  They will then move on to the next list. I will be sending home a copy of these words so you can begin practicing at home.

Math

Students are learning to make and break apart numbers to 9.  They made designs with pattern blocks and counted how many of each pattern block they used.

Writing

Students continued with their Personal Narratives and learned to write about feelings.

Social Studies

We learned the difference between “goods” and “services” this week and made a list of wants for each category. We are also working on learning the economic terms of needs, wants, goods, services and trades.

Science

Force Olympics:  This week, students learned a key idea about forces: how pushes can change the direction and speed of an object’s movement. We learned how some mountain towns in danger of landslides can build structures to protect themselves from falling rocks. Students will design and test their own solutions to re-direct falling boulders away from their town and toward a waiting dump truck in centers this week.

P2: Love

Love is all around us but you may have to look a little closer to find it. Your friendships are a great way to experience love.  You care for your friends and look out for them., always wanting them to be happy.  Your friends show love to you in the same way.
